Our client, 5N Plus, is looking for a Director of Operations to join their team.
Under the Executive Vice President, Performance Materials, the Director of Operations directs and coordinates the operations of the Montreal site.
- Bachelor of Engineering, of science, or other relevant field
- 15 years of management experience including a minimum of 5 years as a senior manager in the manufacturing sector
- Experience in the sectors of Metallurgy, high technology, chemical, electronic, or pharmaceutical
- Proficient in continuous improvement concepts
- Proficient with the HAZOP method and other investigation, risk analysis methods, and tools
- Proficient in maintenance, reliability, and process engineering systems

Brief Description
Under the Executive Vice President, Performance Materials, the Director of Operations directs and coordinates the operations of the Montreal site. He sets the goals, monitors work, and evaluates results to ensure that departmental and organizational objectives as well as operating requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of the organization, the community, and other stakeholders.
He must build and lead an efficient, collaborative, and professional team by implementing and optimizing the management system. Efforts are directed towards the safe and profitable operation of the site by optimizing operating costs and improving facilities through capital investment planning, talent development, and application of best practices in all related fields.
Main Responsibilities
Execution
- Leverages Lean Manufacturing tools to drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives;
- Generates significant, quantifiable sustainable improvements, strengthens, and engrains Lean Manufacturing into the organization’s culture, and develops strong leaders at the business and line levels;
- Assumes full operational responsibility for the site (EH&S, quality, cost, production);
- Leads a team of process/production personnel to achieve demand with the highest quality discipline;
- Researches, analyzes, models, and executes an integrated plan that synchronizes processes and a balance score card which measures financial, operational, and organizational performance;
- Gains success by implementing benchmark metrics to have data-driven capabilities in making accurate and cost-saving decisions about operational opportunities and the services they provide;
- Drives best-in-class process capabilities and operational efficiencies that increase profitability and savings for high-volume processes;
- Drives product development and production processes to ensure appropriate value proposition and go-to-market strategies are developed and implemented;
- Identifies opportunities that will make a significant contribution to operational goals of increasing capacity, productivity, quality, and delivery;
- Manages continuous improvement efforts which may include process design, process implementation, and project oversight, and act as a liaison to customers and vendor partnerships;
- Develops and maintains good working relationships throughout the entire organization;
- Partners with functional leaders to develop and implement strategic initiatives;
- Ensures that employee and customer safety are top priority in all work conducted including maintenance program development;
- Ensures that work that has safety implications is given top priority based on criticality and that a priority system is in place to address such activities;
- Prepares higher level discussion documents and presentations as required to inform on systems’ (including EHS – Product) status, needs, and actions required, for use with executives, board members, and stakeholders;
- Achieves Cost targets;
Leadership and Management
- Manages human resources by corporate standards (performance appraisal, review, and compensation) and implements corporate policies;
- Staff following operational requirements and ensure that the workforce remains highly motivated;
- Develops the team and identify the talent;
- Ensures integrity in decision-making and that decisions are made with the intention of company success in mind;
- Contributes to the development of a culture of customer satisfaction and continuous improvement within the team to meet financial and performance targets.

- Site KPI on target (production, quality, uptime, costs, CAPEX, on-time delivery, inventory, etc.);
- Ensure that the budget is met;
- Enforce EH&S;
- Ensure continuous improvement of internal processes;
- Contribute to grow the business.

Required Qualifications
Training
- Bachelor of Engineering: chemical engineering or materials and metallurgy engineering, or of science: chemistry or physics
- MBA, Master, or Ph.D. (an asset)

- 15 years of management experience including a minimum of 5 years as a senior manager in the manufacturing sector
- Experience in leading a large multidisciplinary team
- 6 Direct Reports, 100 Indirect Reports
- Experience in the sectors of Metallurgy, high technology, chemical, electronic, or pharmaceutical, etc.
- Experienced with an ERP system environment
- Experience in budget management
- Experience in project management
- Experience in process optimization
- Experience in a complex growing environment
Key Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of managing a site such as strategy, operations, finance, and HR
- Sound knowledge of EHS regulations and best practices
- Very good knowledge of chemical and/or metallurgic processes
- Proficient in continuous improvement concepts such as Lean manufacturing, Kaizen, preventive maintenance, 6 Sigma
- Proficient with statistical methods
- Proficient with the HAZOP method and other investigation, risk analysis methods, and tools
- Proficient in maintenance, reliability, and process engineering systems
